Tooth whitening: aftercare

Whitening should only be done by, or under the guidance of, a dentist. These tips help you use it safely.

While you are whitening

• Use only the amount of gel and the wearing time your dentist advised. Wipe any extra gel off your gums.
• Teeth can feel sensitive for a short time. This usually settles. Your dentist may suggest a sensitive toothpaste or a break of a day or two.

Afterwards

• Cutting down on tea, coffee and tobacco helps the colour last.
• Fillings, crowns and veneers do not change colour.
• Avoid whitening from beauty salons or unregulated kits. Some can harm your gums and teeth.
