After scaling and cleaning
Scaling removes tartar above and, for a deep clean, below the gum line, so the gums can heal and tighten.
The first few days
- Gums may feel tender and teeth may be sensitive to cold. This usually settles within a few days.
- A little bleeding when you brush for a day or two is common.
- As the swelling goes down, the gums may shrink slightly and the gaps between teeth can look a little bigger.
- Warm salty-water rinses can soothe sore gums.
Every day at home
- Brush twice a day with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste, tilted towards the gum line.
- Clean between your teeth every day with floss or small interdental brushes.
- Smoking slows gum healing. Cutting down or stopping helps.
Check-ups
- After a deep clean, the gums are checked again after a few weeks. Keep your regular check-ups.
Call the clinic if
- Bleeding has not settled after a few days.
- Swelling or pain is getting worse.
- A tooth feels loose.
