After implant surgery
After an implant is placed, the bone heals around it over a few months. Careful aftercare in the first days helps healing.
Today
- Bite on the gauze for about 30 minutes.
- Rest, and keep your head raised with an extra pillow the first night.
- A cold pack held on the cheek (10 minutes on, 10 minutes off) for the first few hours can reduce swelling.
- For 24 hours, do not rinse, spit hard, use a straw, smoke or drink alcohol. Eat soft, cool food on the other side.
The next few days
- From the next day, rinse gently with warm salty water after meals, or use any mouthwash as advised.
- Swelling and bruising are common and are often worst on day 2 or 3.
- Take any medicines exactly as your dentist advises.
- Brush your other teeth as normal, and clean around the implant gently as shown.
- Do not wear a denture over the area unless your dentist says it is fine.
- Smoking can affect healing, so avoid it.
Stitches and review
- Stitches, if used, dissolve or are removed in about 1 to 2 weeks. Keep your review appointment.
Call the clinic if
- Bleeding does not stop after pressing for 20 minutes.
