After gum surgery
After gum surgery the area needs a little time and gentle care to heal. Soreness for a few days is common.
Today
- Rest. A little oozing for the first day is normal. If it bleeds, press a damp gauze on it for 15 minutes.
- A cold pack held on the cheek (10 minutes on, 10 minutes off) can reduce swelling.
- Avoid hot food and drinks until the numbness has worn off.
- Do not brush the treated area today. Do not smoke or drink alcohol.
The next few days
- Eat soft food and chew on the other side.
- Use any mouthwash and take any medicines as advised.
- Brush your other teeth as normal, and the treated area gently when your dentist says.
- Teeth may feel sensitive and the gums may shrink a little as they heal.
Stitches and review
- Stitches stay for about 1 to 2 weeks. Keep your review appointment.
Call the clinic if
- Bleeding does not stop after pressing for 20 minutes.
- Pain or swelling is getting worse after 3 days, or you have a fever.
- A dressing or stitches come out early and the area is painful.
