After a filling
Most fillings need only simple care. Tooth-coloured fillings are set hard with a blue light before you leave.
Today
- Wait until the numbness wears off before eating, so you do not bite your lip or cheek.
- If you had a silver (amalgam) filling, avoid chewing hard on it for the rest of the day.
The next few days
- Some sensitivity to cold or sweet is common. It usually settles over a few days to a couple of weeks.
- A toothpaste for sensitive teeth can help.
- Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth every day.
Call the clinic if
- Your bite feels high once the numbness has gone.
- Sensitivity is getting worse, or lasts more than 2 weeks.
- It hurts to bite, there is a sharp edge, or the filling breaks or falls out.
