After a tooth is taken out
A blood clot forms in the socket. It protects the bone and helps healing, so the aim is to keep it in place.
Today
- Bite firmly on the gauze for about 30 minutes.
- Rest for the rest of the day. Keep your head raised with an extra pillow the first night.
- Your lip and tongue may stay numb for a few hours. Take care not to bite them, and avoid hot drinks until the numbness wears off.
- For 24 hours, do not rinse, spit hard, use a straw, smoke or drink alcohol.
The next few days
- From the next day, rinse gently with warm salty water after meals (half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water).
- Eat soft food and chew on the other side.
- Brush your other teeth as normal, and gently near the socket.
- Some soreness and swelling for a few days is normal. Take painkillers as advised by your dentist.
- Stay off smoking for as long as you can. It slows healing.
If it bleeds
- Sit upright. Press a clean, rolled-up gauze or cloth on the socket and bite firmly for 15 minutes.
Call the clinic if
- Bleeding does not stop after pressing for 20 minutes.
- Pain gets worse after 2 to 4 days.
- There is a bad taste or smell, swelling or a fever.
Call 98957 30568 or 0460 2202784. Mon–Sat 9:30 am – 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm; Sunday closed.
Go to hospital casualty straight away if
- Swelling spreads towards your eye or down your neck.
- You find it hard to breathe or swallow.
- Bleeding is heavy and will not stop with firm pressure.
