New dentures: aftercare
New dentures take a few weeks to get used to. Speaking and eating get easier with practice.
The first few weeks
- Dentures may feel large and you may have more saliva at first. This settles.
- Reading aloud helps you get used to speaking with them.
- Start with soft food cut into small pieces, and chew on both sides at the same time.
- Sore spots are common. Do not try to adjust the denture yourself; it can be eased at the clinic.
Cleaning every day
- Take the dentures out and clean them every day with a soft brush and soap or denture cleaner.
- Clean them over a basin of water or a folded towel, in case you drop them.
- Brush your gums, tongue and any remaining teeth.
- Your dentist will usually advise leaving them out at night. Keep them in water so they do not dry out, and avoid hot water.
Call the clinic if
- A sore spot is not getting better after a few days.
- The denture is loose, cracked or broken. Do not glue it at home.
- Any sore or ulcer in the mouth has not healed within 2 weeks.
