Crowns and bridges: aftercare

A crown or bridge needs the same daily care as your natural teeth, plus a little extra cleaning around the edges.

With a temporary crown or bridge

• Avoid sticky food such as toffee or chewing gum, and hard food on that side.
• When cleaning between the teeth, slide the floss out sideways rather than pulling it up.
• If it comes off, keep it safe and call the clinic.

After the final crown or bridge is fitted

• It may feel a little different or sensitive for a few days.
• Brush twice a day, paying attention to where the crown meets the gum.
• Clean under a bridge every day with floss threaders or small brushes, as your dentist shows you.
• Avoid biting on very hard things such as ice, bones or nut shells.
